Nissan has never been a manufacturer that sticks to just one type of buyer. From compact hatchbacks and family SUVs to pick-ups and large MPVs, its range has covered some very different interpretations of everyday motoring.
That variety is reflected in the Nissan cars we have at Bruce Cousin Motors. Our current stock includes the Nissan Elgrand, alongside a Navara that is currently marked as sold, giving an indication of the sort of unusual and practical Nissan models that can come through our stock. Availability changes regularly, so it is worth checking the latest listings before travelling to us.
Nissan Elgrand: space with a difference
The Elgrand is not the obvious choice if you are simply looking for a conventional family car, and that is precisely why it can be interesting.
Our current Elgrand is a Highway Star Urban Chrome, an automatic petrol MPV with a 2.5-litre engine, five doors and seating designed around carrying people rather than squeezing everything into a conventional SUV. It has covered 37,287 miles and is currently advertised at £13,995.
For buyers who need genuine passenger space, an MPV can still make a lot of sense. The taller body makes getting in and out easier, while the additional room gives you much more flexibility for family trips, passengers or simply carrying bulky belongings.
It is also worth recognising that an Elgrand is a more unusual used-car purchase. If you like cars that are a little different from the usual choices on the road, it has plenty of appeal.
Nissan Navara for work and weekends
The Navara occupies an entirely different corner of the Nissan line-up.
The example recently listed with us was a 2.3-litre dCi 190 Tekna Double Cab with four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. It had covered 65,882 miles and was listed at £12,995 before being sold.
A double-cab pick-up can make sense for someone whose car needs to do more than carry a family. The separate load area is useful for equipment and working gear, while the double-cab layout retains useful passenger space.
Four-wheel drive adds another layer of versatility, particularly for buyers who regularly drive on less predictable surfaces or need the extra traction associated with a pick-up.
Choosing the right used Nissan
The important thing with Nissan is not to start with the badge and work backwards. Start with what you actually need the vehicle to do.
If passenger space is the priority, something like the Elgrand is a very different proposition from a conventional hatchback. If you need load-carrying ability, towing capability or a vehicle that can cope with work duties, a Navara-type pick-up is much more relevant.
Think about your normal week rather than the occasional journey. How many people do you carry? Do you need a large luggage area? Are you regularly towing or carrying equipment? Is an automatic gearbox useful in your daily driving? Those questions will narrow down the right type of Nissan far more effectively than simply choosing the newest-looking car.
What to check when buying a used Nissan
With any used vehicle, condition and history matter at least as much as the badge on the bonnet.
Pay particular attention to the service record, tyres, brakes, suspension and general condition underneath the car. On an automatic, the gearbox should operate smoothly, while a diesel pick-up deserves especially close attention to its previous use and maintenance.
For an MPV, inspect the interior carefully. These cars are often bought because they can carry several people, so evidence of heavy family or passenger use is worth looking for. With a pick-up, check the load area and look closely for signs of hard commercial use.
A proper test drive is valuable too. It gives you the chance to assess the gearbox, steering, brakes and general way the vehicle feels rather than relying solely on photographs and specifications.
