Ford's used range is broad enough to suit very different buyers, which is part of the reason the badge is so familiar on British roads. You can choose from compact cars, family SUVs, practical people carriers and larger vehicles, depending on what you need from your next car.

At Bruce Cousin Motors, our current Ford stock includes a Ford EcoSport and a Ford Tourneo Connect, giving buyers two quite different approaches to everyday motoring. The EcoSport is a compact SUV-style car, while the Tourneo Connect is much more focused on passenger space and versatility.

Choosing a used Ford that fits your life

The useful thing about buying Ford second-hand is the sheer variety available.

If you spend most of your time around town, a smaller Ford can be easier to park, cheaper to run and more straightforward to live with. For family buyers, an SUV such as the Kuga provides additional cabin space and a higher driving position.

If passenger capacity and flexibility are more important, models such as the Tourneo Connect offer a very different layout, with an MPV-style cabin designed around carrying people and their belongings.

Our current stock reflects that difference. The 2017 Ford EcoSport 1.5 TDCi Titanium is a manual diesel with 68,166 miles, while the 2016 Ford Tourneo Connect 1.5 TDCi Titanium Powershift is an automatic diesel MPV with 83,407 miles.

Ford EcoSport

The EcoSport is worth considering if you want a compact vehicle with the driving position and styling associated with an SUV.

Its relatively small footprint makes it easier to handle in urban environments, while the raised seating position can be useful when getting in and out or when you simply prefer a higher view of the road.

Our current EcoSport is a 1.5 TDCi Titanium, with a manual gearbox and five-door body.

For a buyer covering a mixture of local roads and longer journeys, it offers a straightforward combination of compact dimensions and diesel-powered practicality.

Ford Tourneo Connect

The Tourneo Connect is aimed at a different type of buyer.

It is an MPV rather than a conventional family hatchback or SUV, giving you a more spacious and flexible interior. That makes it particularly useful if you regularly carry several passengers, need extra room for luggage or simply want a vehicle that can adapt to different jobs.

Our current example is a 1.5 TDCi 120 Titanium Powershift, with an automatic gearbox and five-door layout.

The automatic transmission can also be useful if much of your driving involves traffic and urban routes.

Petrol or diesel?

The Ford cars currently listed by us are diesel models, but the wider used Ford market gives you plenty of choice between petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains depending on model and age.

For anyone buying an older used Ford, the important thing is to consider the journeys you actually make. Diesel can work well for regular longer-distance driving, while petrol is often the simpler choice for predominantly short trips.

With an older diesel vehicle in particular, it is worth looking at the service history and considering whether your usual journey lengths suit the car.

What should you check when buying a used Ford?

Mileage is an obvious starting point, but it should not be the only thing you consider.

Service history, previous maintenance, tyre condition, MOT history and the overall condition of the vehicle all help build a better picture of how a used Ford has been looked after.

Specification is important too. Our current Ford stock includes Titanium models, but equipment can vary according to model year and individual vehicle.

If you are comparing two cars at different prices, look beyond the headline figure and consider what you are actually getting for the difference.

Used Ford servicing in Scunthorpe

Buying a used Ford from us also means you have access to our workshop for ongoing maintenance.

Bruce Cousin Motors provides Ford servicing, MOT testing, diagnostics, air-conditioning work, automatic gearbox services, cambelt and wetbelt work and timing-chain services. Our workshop works across different makes and models, so you do not need to own a Ford to use our aftersales facilities.

That local support can be particularly useful when buying an older used car, where keeping on top of routine maintenance is an important part of ownership.
